MIT Lincoln Laboratory RMI Intern Training Program Summer 2017

Description

MIT Lincoln Laboratory  RMI Intern Training Program – Summer 2017 Description: The Massachusetts Institute of Technology Lincoln Laboratory (MIT LL), partnered with the logistical support of United State Army Garrison – Kwajalein Atoll (USAG-KA), has established an information technology training program at the Reagan Test Site (RTS).  The summer 2017 program will last for ten weeks, providing an opportunity for up to two (2) motivated RMI interns to gain valuable on-the-job training in the field of information technology related to computer management, server administration, and computer networking.

The objective of this program is to provide mentoring, resources, motivation, and assistance to encourage the interns to pursue further education and subsequent employment in the Marshall Islands while they productively contribute to RTS information technology needs. Tentative program dates are 13 June 2017 – 12 August 2017.

Eligibility:

Applicants must be an RMI citizen, high school graduate, fluent in English, and demonstrate competence or strong interest in computers, servers and networking.  Since this program is designed to complement college education for RMI students, preference will be given to applicants that are currently enrolled in college, graduated from college or have graduated high school and are accepted at college for an upcoming semester.  Recent academic report card or transcript is desired to demonstrate academic achievement.

 Program Supervision:

Mr. Ranny Ranis, an MIT LL employee and RMI citizen, will be teaching the interns and will be their daily mentor. MIT Lincoln Laboratory staff will directly supervise the daily activities of selected interns. Kwajalein Range Services (KRS) staff and government personnel may provide additional teaching topics at times.

 Support:

In contrast to years prior, lodging will not be provided on Kwajalein. Interns will need to have lodging arranged on the neighboring island of Ebeye. Transportation to and from Kwajalein will be provided by the USAG-KA ferry and a schedule will be provided to the selected applicants. MIT will provide a weekly stipend to cover three meals a day and expenses directly to the intern.  MIT will also provide each intern a $1,000 scholarship after acceptance into an accredited university and successful completion of the program. The scholarship will be available through 30 April 2018.  This is to provide an incentive to complete the program and continue college education. The total value of this program is approximately $1,750 per intern.

Selection:

A committee consisting of representatives from MIT LL will select applicants based on their application form, computer background questionnaire, English skills (oral and written), previous academic performance and in-person interviews. The committee will accept the application forms via email until 13 May 2017 and will also be taking applications and conducting in-person interviews 17 May 2017and 19 May 2017 at the Ebeye CMI Campus. Once selected, the intern’s continued participation in the program will depend on strict adherence to the daily work schedule, completion of all projects in full and on-time, and appropriate behavior on Kwajalein both during and outside of work hours.  Drinking or other inappropriate behavior will not be tolerated and will result in immediate cancellation of the internship.

 Topics:

Intern will be exposed to many topics during the program, from setup of standard desktop computer systems to configuration of servers and networking equipment, all of which are relevant to modern Information Technology (IT) departments.  Each week, some time will be spent learning about the new topic and any background material, while the remaining time will be for implementing the ideas with hands-on projects.  The projects listed below are examples for each topic area, which may be modified as the internship progresses.   Upon completion of the program, the intern will give a presentation to summarize their work and show what they learned during the program.
